Eczema
Eczema is a chronic skin condition that causes itchy, red, and inflamed skin. While common in childhood, eczema can also affect adults. Common causes of eczema include: dry skin, fragrance mixes, skin infections, environmental allergens, and scratching and picking at areas of skin.
Symptoms
Eczema is characterized by skin that overreacts to a variety of triggers. Often the skin barrier is not functioning properly. Common symptoms include:
- Itching
- Skin tenderness
- Poor sleep due to itching
Treatments
Treatment of eczema often requires both treatment of acute flares and lifestyle changes to help prevent flares. Common treatments include:
- Moisturizers to help repair skin barrier
- Topical anti-inflammatory cream
- Oral medications to control inflammation and/or infection
