Cysts
A cyst is a closed sac that contains a “pasty” or “cheesy” substance that often has a foul odor often appearing on the scalp, face, ears, back or groin area. Cysts are usually harmless, slow-growing bumps under the skin.
Symptoms
Where do cysts develop?
- Most skin cysts originate from superficial skin structures around hair follicles and/or oil glands
- Appear as firm bumps or nodules
- Can develop anywhere on your body, but tend to favor the face, neck, and back
For most people, cysts in their skin don’t cause problems and don’t require medical intervention. Your cyst may resolve on its own over time or remain unchanged forever.
However, you should contact your provider at Dermatology, Inc. if the cyst:
- Grows rapidly
- Causes pain
- Is red and inflamed
- Is bothersome
Treatments
Treatment depends on the size, location, and symptoms. If removal of the cyst is recommended, our dermatologists perform an in-office surgical excision under local anesthesia. This may not be able to be performed at your initial visit if the cyst is relatively large or you have other concerns that also need to be addressed.
